New Mexicans like Hayes have definitely questioned the sign in kilometers just outside Santa Fe.
“I’ve never seen a sign anywhere in the country I guess that says kilometers,” said Hayes.
So why was the sign put here in the first place? A spokesperson for the State Department of Transportation said it was put up about 10 years ago, when Bill Richardson was governor.
